How Do Quasicrystals Grow?
Using molecular simulations, we show that the aperiodic growth of
quasicrystals is controlled by the ability of the growing quasicrystal
`nucleus' to incorporate kinetically trapped atoms into the solid phase with
minimal rearrangement. In the system under investigation, which forms a
dodecagonal quasicrystal, we show that this process occurs through the
assimilation of stable icosahedral clusters by the growing quasicrystal. Our
results demonstrate how local atomic interactions give rise to the long-range

Exploring the Determinants of High-Cost Mortgages to Homeowners in Low- and Moderate-Income Neighborhoods
In spite of the recent impetus to reform home mortgage markets, particularly as they affect low- and moderate-income (LMI) households, little systematic evidence is available about how potential abuses in mortgage lending manifest in the mortgages held by those households. While racial discrimination in mortgage markets has a long history in the United States, the role of mortgage brokers in lending has only recently increased and become controversial. In this chapter, we uncover two mechanisms through which differential mortgage pricing occurs among LMI homeowners: black borrowers and borrowers who use mortgage brokers pay more for mortgage loans than other borrowers, after controlling for a wide variety of factors
Predesign study for a modern 4-bladed rotor for the NASA rotor systems research aircraft
Trade-off study results and the rationale for the final selection of an existing modern four-bladed rotor system that can be adapted for installation on the Rotor Systems Research Aircraft (RSRA) are reported. The results of the detailed integration studies, parameter change studies, and instrumentation studies and the recommended plan for development and qualification of the rotor system is also given. Its parameter variants, integration on the RSRA, and support of ground and flight test programs are also discussed
Applicability of dynamic facilitation theory to binary hard disk systems
We numerically investigate the applicability of dynamic facilitation (DF) theory for glass-forming binary hard disk systems where supercompression is controlled by pressure. By using novel efficient algorithms for hard disks, we are able to generate equilibrium supercompressed states in an additive nonequimolar binary mixture, where microcrystallization and size segregation do not emerge at high average packing fractions. Above an onset pressure where collective heterogeneous relaxation sets in, we find that relaxation times are well described by a âparabolic lawâ with pressure. We identify excitations, or soft spots, that give rise to structural relaxation and find that they are spatially localized, their average concentration decays exponentially with pressure, and their associated energy scale is logarithmic in the excitation size. These observations are consistent with the predictions of DF generalized to systems controlled by pressure rather than temperature
A Search for High-Frequency Coronal Brightness Variations in the 21 August 2017 Total Solar Eclipse
We report on a search for short-period intensity variations in the green-line
FeXIV 530.3 nm emission from the solar corona during the 21 August 2017 total
eclipse viewed from Idaho in the United States. Our experiment was performed
with a much more sensitive detection system, and with better spatial
resolution, than on previous occasions (1999 and 2001 eclipses), allowing fine
details of quiet coronal loops and an active-region loop system to be seen. A
guided 200-mm-aperture Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope was used with a
state-of-the-art CCD camera having 16-bit intensity discrimination and a
field-of-view 0.43 degree x 0.43 degree that encompassed approximately one
third of the visible corona. The camera pixel size was 1.55 arcseconds, while
the seeing during the eclipse enabled features of approx. 2 arcseconds (1450 km
on the Sun) to be resolved. A total of 429 images were recorded during a 122.9
second portion of the totality at a frame rate of 3.49 images per second. In
the analysis, we searched particularly for short-period intensity oscillations
and travelling waves, since theory predicts fast-mode magneto-hydrodynamic
(MHD) waves with short periods may be important in quiet coronal and
active-region heating. Allowing first for various instrumental and photometric
effects, we used a wavelet technique to search for periodicities in some 404
000 pixels in the frequency range 0.5-1.6 Hz (periods: 2 second to 0.6 second).
We also searched for travelling waves along some 65 coronal structures.
However, we found no statistically significant evidence in either. This
negative result considerably refines the limit that we obtained from our
previous analyses, and it indicates that future searches for short-period
coronal waves may be better directed towards Doppler shifts as well as
intensity oscillations
Cube law, condition factor and weight-length relationships: history, meta-analysis and recommendations
This study presents a historical review, a meta-analysis, and recommendations for users about weightâlength relationships, condition factors and relative weight equations. The historical review traces the developments of the respective concepts. The meta-analysis explores 3929 weightâlength relationships of the type W = aLb for 1773 species of fishes. It shows that 82% of the variance in a plot of log a over b can be explained by allometric versus isometric growth patterns and by different body shapes of the respective species. Across species median b = 3.03 is significantly larger than 3.0, thus indicating a tendency towards slightly positive-allometric growth (increase in relative body thickness or plumpness) in most fishes. The expected range of 2.5 < b < 3.5 is confirmed. Mean estimates of b outside this range are often based on only one or two weightâlength relationships per species. However, true cases of strong allometric growth do exist and three examples are given. Within species, a plot of log a vs b can be used to detect outliers in weightâlength relationships. An equation to calculate mean condition factors from weightâlength relationships is given as Kmean = 100aLbâ3. Relative weight Wrm = 100W/(amLbm) can be used for comparing the condition of individuals across populations, where am is the geometric mean of a and bm is the mean of b across all available weightâlength relationships for a given species. Twelve recommendations for proper use and presentation of weightâlength relationships, condition factors and relative weight are given
Affordability, financial innovation and the start of the housing boom
At their peak in 2005, roughly 60 percent of all purchase mortgage loans originated in the United States contained at least one non-traditional feature. These features, which allowed borrowers easier access to credit through teaser interest rates, interest-only or negative amortization periods, and extended payment terms, have been the subject of much regulatory and popular criticism. In this paper, we construct a novel county-level dataset to analyze the relationship between rising house prices and non-traditional features of mortgage contracts. We apply a break-point methodology and find that in housing markets with breaks in the mid-2000s, a strong rise in the use of non-traditional mortgages preceded the start of the housing boom. Furthermore, their rise was coupled with declining denial rates and a shift from FHA to subprime mortgages. Our findings support the view that a change in mortgage contract availability and a shift toward subprime borrowers helped to fuel the rise of house prices during the last decade
Putting theory oriented evaluation into practice
Evaluations of gaming simulations and business games as teaching devices are typically end-state driven. This emphasis fails to detect how the simulation being evaluated does or does not bring about its desired consequences. This paper advances the use of a logic model approach which possesses a holistic perspective that aims at including all elements associated with the situation created by a game. The use of the logic model approach is illustrated as applied to Simgame, a board game created for secondary school level business education in six European Union countries
